So let’s get down to the basics and explain!

Foster a Pet Near Me: What is Pet Fostering?
Pet fostering is the act of allowing a dog or cat to stay at your home temporarily until the rescue can find someone to adopt it. This is a full time commitment and makes the biggest difference for our animals. They will be able to get to know what a true loving home looks like until they are able to find the right one for them.
Benefits of Pet Fostering
Pet fostering offers numerous benefits for both the foster pet and the foster parent. By providing a temporary home for a pet in need, foster parents can make a significant difference in the life of that animal. Here are some of the benefits of pet fostering:
Provides a Safe and Nurturing Environment: Foster parents offer a loving and secure home where pets can feel safe and cared for.
Helps Pets Recover: Many foster pets are recovering from trauma, illness, or behavioral issues. A stable home environment aids in their recovery.
Increases Adoption Chances: Pets in foster homes often have a higher chance of being adopted as they can be better socialized and their personalities can shine through.
Gains Experience and Knowledge: Foster parents learn valuable skills in animal care and behavior, which can be beneficial for future pet ownership.
Flexible and Rewarding: Fostering is a flexible volunteer opportunity that fits various lifestyles and offers immense personal satisfaction.
Positive Impact: Foster parents make a tangible difference in the lives of homeless pets, contributing to their well-being and future happiness.
How does pet fostering help the animal rescue?
At We Care More Animal Rescue, we are a foster-based program which means we rely on foster caregivers to be able to care for our animals. Without the help of our foster caregivers, our animals would have nowhere to go until they were able to get adopted. Our foster caregivers also provide us with valuable insight on the animals such as their temperament, personality, and skills. These facts become important to the rescue when we are trying to place a cat or dog with its forever owner.
How Foster Care Works
Foster care is a temporary arrangement where a foster parent provides care and support for a pet in their own home. Here’s an overview of how foster care works:
Supplies Provided: The foster program supplies all necessary items, including food, litter, bedding, bowls, crates, collars, and leashes.
Transportation: Foster parents are responsible for transporting foster pets to and from the shelter for check-ups and medical care.
Behavioral Support: The foster team offers guidance and support to help foster parents manage any behavioral issues.
Collaboration: Foster parents work closely with the shelter team to ensure the best possible care for the foster pet.
Variable Foster Period: The duration of the foster period varies depending on the needs of the pet and the availability of the foster parent.
How does pet fostering impact the foster parents?
Foster volunteers play a crucial role in providing temporary care for pets in a nurturing environment, and pet fostering can actually be beneficial to the person in a lot of ways. If you or your family has considered having a pet but you are not 100% sure you are ready this is a great way to test if this lifestyle could be for you. Additionally animals can help those who are feeling down and need a pick me up providing temporary companionship. There is also an element of satisfaction for the foster knowing that the animal has found a good home and that would have not been possible without them.
Is fostering the right option for me?
While pet fostering is a temporary thing, it is somewhat of a full time commitment. There are numerous foster resources available to help guide you through the process, including care tips, emergency information, and promotional strategies to help fostered animals find permanent homes. You will need to walk, feed, take the pet for check ups at the rescue, and sometimes even training sessions. This can be a lot for some people but if you are willing to invest the time or are considering a pet in the long run this could be a good trial for you.

What does it take to join a foster program?
While every rescue has its own set of criteria, ours starts with a simple form fill for those interested in becoming a foster caregiver. Once you fill it out our shelter director will call and ask you a few questions relating to fostering. Then they will conduct an in-house visit to assess the space. If there are any other animals present in the home they must be spayed and neutered as well as up to date on all vaccinations. If selected as a foster there is the expectation that the landlord has allowed for animals at the location.
What happens if I want to adopt the foster pet I fostered?
That honestly would warm our hearts and it does occasionally happen. While this foster to adoption process is referred to as a “foster fail”, we here at We Care More Animal Rescue look at it as a success. It means that the foster dog was placed in the right home for it and that it will truly be loved and cared for.
When should I consider the foster period?
At our rescue any time is a good time to consider fostering as we need fosters all year round. If you are interested in helping our rescue foster one of our amazing animals please fill out the form and we will get back to you shortly!
